Unaware and Still Responsible: Grace, Growth, and the Sin of Omission

On the cross, Jesus Christ said: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” — Luke 23:34

This statement reveals something profound about human behavior.

They Did Not Know… Yet It Still Happened

There was real harm. There were real consequences. And yet…there was also unawareness.

The Tension We Must Hold

This creates an important balance:

  • People can be unaware

  • And still be responsible

Applying This to Omission

Many people:

  • fail to express care

  • fail to show gratitude

  • fail to act when needed

Not because they intend harm, but because they do not fully see.

The Danger of One-Sided Thinking

If we only focus on truth, we judge harshly. If we only focus on grace, we excuse everything.

But Growth Requires Both

Truth says: “This matters, It has impact.”

Grace says: “There is more to understand.”

A Deeper Perspective

“Unawareness explains behavior, but it does not remove responsibility.”

What This Means for Us

We are invited to:

  • grow in awareness

  • take responsibility for what we omit

  • practice what we have not yet developed

A Compassionate Reframe

Instead of asking: “Why am I like this?”

We might ask: “What have I not yet learned to see or practice?”

So here is something to reflect on - where might you be:

  • unaware?

  • unpracticed?

  • unintentionally withholding something good?

Growth is not only about stopping what is wrong…but learning to practice what is right—intentionally and consistently. Sometimes the greatest transformation begins not with what we do differently—
but with what we finally learn to see.
